Jakarta (The Indonesian News) – In front of President Prabowo Subianto, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung repeatedly invoked the number 8 as he announced the fare for the Light Rail Transit (LRT) Kelapa Gading–Manggarai route. For eight days after the inauguration, the fare will be Rp8 as a trial period so the public can experience the comfort of this mode of transport.
“On this occasion we also want to inform the President, and at the same time ask his permission — as we reported earlier, for eight days all Jakarta residents who use the LRT, starting now after the President inaugurates it, the fare is 8 rupiah, sir,” Pramono said at Manggarai Station in South Jakarta on Wednesday (16/9).
“It’s practically free, sir,” he said. The special fare is expected to draw public interest in trying out — and getting to know — the route, facilities and comfort of the public transit line at a very affordable price.
Pramono is optimistic that the LRT experience will encourage more Jakarta residents to shift from private vehicles to public transportation. “I am confident that with this eight-day trial, the public will feel the comfort of using this Jakarta LRT,” he said.
The Kelapa Gading–Manggarai line expands public transportation connectivity in Jakarta. It links residential areas, community activity centers and a transport hub, allowing passengers to continue their journeys using other modes of transport.
Besides announcing the special Rp8 fare, Pramono reported to the President that the Jakarta provincial government has provided free public transportation to 15 categories of residents, including the elderly, veterans, people with disabilities, military and police personnel, and residents of the Thousand Islands.
The policy applies across various public transportation services under the Jakarta provincial government, including the LRT, MRT, TransJakarta, TransJabodetabek, and services integrated through JakLingko.
He explained that the policy reflects the local government’s commitment to supporting groups that need easier access to public transportation.
“So all public facilities owned by the Jakarta government are now free for these 15 categories, sir,” he said.
Beyond the groups already mentioned, similar facilities can also be extended to other residents who meet the requirements and register through the relevant municipally owned enterprise. “And other community groups who then register with the Jakarta government,” he added.
