Jakarta (The Indonesian News) – President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto expressed his joy and pride at the success of the Indonesian National Team in winning the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 after defeating Thailand in a dramatic final match held at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium (SUGBK), Jakarta, on Monday (October 5) evening.

Indonesia secured the championship title after winning 4-2 through a penalty shootout.

Previously, both teams drew 2-2 until the match lasted 120 minutes. This victory also made Indonesia the champion of the inaugural edition of the FIFA ASEAN Cup.

After the match, Prabowo described the Garuda players’ struggle as an example of a never-give-up spirit.

“Happy. I think it is proud-making, and this is an example, an example of a spirit that never gives up,” Prabowo said after watching the match.

This success is an important record for Indonesian football, as Garuda was able to win the title in an inter-nation competition organized by FIFA in the ASEAN region.

“And we succeeded. And this is perhaps the first time in history, yes, that we have won a FIFA inter-nation match,” Prabowo said.

Indonesia’s journey to the championship title was not easy. Garuda took the lead first through Dean James at the end of normal time before Thailand equalized.

In extra time, Thailand briefly took the lead. Indonesia then equalized again through Elkan Baggott, so the match had to be decided through a penalty shootout.

In the deciding round, four Indonesian takers successfully carried out their duties.

Goalkeeper Emil Audero then became one of the decisive factors in the victory after thwarting Thailand’s penalty kick. Indonesia ultimately won 4-2 and secured the championship trophy.
