Jakarta (The Indonesian News) – The government is moving quickly to handle flooding that hit several areas in Padang City, West Sumatra, after high-intensity rain poured over the region on Saturday (October 10, 2026).

Resident evacuations, the establishment of evacuation posts, health services, and the distribution of basic needs assistance are being carried out to ensure safety and help affected residents.

Response efforts are being carried out in an integrated manner involving the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), BPBD, Polri, TNI, Basarnas, regional governments, as well as volunteers and the community. Joint officers were deployed to a number of affected locations to evacuate residents, collect data on flood impacts, and meet the needs of evacuees.

Based on a report from the Disaster Management Operations Control Center (Pusdalops) of the West Sumatra Provincial BPBD on Sunday (October 11) at 03:34 WIB, flooding was still inundating a number of residential areas. Data collection and resident evacuation continue in line with the developing situation on the ground.

Acting Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center, Berton SP Panjaitan, explained that the flood hit three districts—Kuranji, Koto Tangah, and Nanggalo—covering six urban villages: Kuranji, Koto Panjang Ikua Koto, Batipuh Panjang, Lubuk Minturun, Tabiang Banda Gadang, and Gurun Laweh.

Preliminary data recorded approximately 225 households or 498 people affected by the flood. Meanwhile, 672 people were reported to have evacuated in Kuranji District.

“These figures are still in the process of data collection and updating by officers,” Berton said in his statement on Sunday (October 11).

Berton added that amid these conditions, the joint SAR team has evacuated 238 people from affected areas. The evacuation process and rapid assessment are being carried out by the Padang City BPBD together with various relevant elements to reach residents in need of assistance and ensure their safety.

BNPB recorded that evacuees are currently spread across three locations. A total of 367 people are at the Lapau Munggu evacuation tent and residents’ homes, 250 people are occupying Mushalla Ar Ridwan Kampung Tangah, while another 55 people are at Warung Jembatan Guo.

In addition to rescuing residents, the government is also accelerating the fulfillment of basic needs for affected communities. The government has distributed 500 packs of rice meals, while the Padang City BPBD distributed 100 blankets to help residents during their stay at evacuation sites.

Logistical support was also provided by the Padang City Social Service in the form of 23 boxes of instant noodles, 30 packages of children’s food, 30 family kit packages, 16 packages of children’s clothing, and 30 units or sheets of mattresses.

“This assistance was distributed to the Koto Tangah and Kuranji areas in accordance with the needs and distribution objectives of each agency,” Berton said.

Polri Deploys Hundreds of Personnel, Prepares Health Posts

In line with the response efforts of the regional government and BNPB, the Polri, through the West Sumatra Regional Police, also deployed joint personnel to accelerate evacuation and provide protection to the community. Officers were deployed to a number of flood points, including Lumin Park Housing, Kuranji, Goa, and Sungai Lareh.

Hundreds of personnel from the Brimob Unit, the Samapta Directorate, the Water and Air Police Directorate, the Padang City Police, as well as SAR and Basarnas elements were involved in the response. They assisted with the evacuation process, secured residential areas, and provided services to residents in need of assistance.

The Polri reported that all residents in the areas handled were successfully evacuated safely. As of the submission of the report, no fatalities were reported.

To ensure the safety of residents after evacuation, the West Sumatra Regional Police also prepared evacuation posts and deployed 250 personnel to guard residents’ abandoned homes. This step was taken to help maintain environmental security while homeowners are at evacuation sites.

Health posts and SAR posts were also established in affected areas. The presence of these posts supports medical services, first aid, and coordination to anticipate further evacuation needs should flood conditions worsen again.

Attention was also given to vulnerable groups, especially children and the elderly. In addition to health services and logistical support, clothing assistance was distributed to children and residents whose clothes were soaked due to the flood.

On the other hand, officers urged the public not to return to homes that are still at risk of being inundated and to continue following the instructions of officers in the field. This advisory is part of prevention efforts to avoid casualties should subsequent flooding occur.
