Nganjuk (The Indonesian News) – The presence of the Red and White Village Cooperative (KDKMP) Nglundo in Nganjuk regency, East Java, has delighted local shallot farmers. Since the cooperative was established, farmers’ shallot harvests have been bought at above-market prices.
Not only that, KDKMP Nglundo is also empowering local residents, especially women, to earn extra income. The women there earn additional money by weighing and packing farmers’ red shallot harvests before they are transported and marketed by KDKMP Nglundo.
“KDKMP Nglundo, Nganjuk regency, buys red shallots harvested by local farmers at Rp2,000 per kilogram above the middleman’s price,” reads a post by Joao de Sousa Mota, president director of PT Agrinas Pangan Nusantara, on the Instagram account @bung.joaomota on Saturday (19/9).
KDKMP Nglundo has also optimized its pickup trucks and three-wheeled cargo motorcycles to transport agricultural produce.
“This is what KDKMP means by being a patron a protector and driver for farmers, even from the very start of the planting season,” he said.
KDKMP also continues to supply the daily needs of farmers and village residents, including subsidized fertilizer, 3-kilogram gas cylinders and MinyaKita cooking oil.
Jumini, a resident of Nglundo village, said she is grateful to be involved in the KDKMP Nglundo ecosystem. Since the village cooperative became active, she has been able to earn extra income.
“While working in the fields, I also help KDKMP keep things running. I’m happy, thank God it adds to the household income,” Jumini said.
Red shallot prices in Nganjuk regency often fluctuate sharply, especially during the peak harvest period. At the middleman or free-market level, red shallots fetch around Rp14,000 to Rp18,000. KDKMP Nglundo, however, buys them above the market price.
